A rich history

During its history with its 7th century creation, the city has taken advantage of its good coastal position. After its foundation, it was under the protection of Byzantium. The city passed over several dominions in the Middle Ages with the crusade and other conquests. In modern times, the city’s history has also been marked by an earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people. In 1991, the Yugoslav army carried out an attack on the city and surrounded the city during the Croatian War of Independence. According to the Red Cross, the number of victims during this siege is 114 civilians among others.

Dubrovnik cathedral
